3 Common Mistakes in the Selective School Exam (+ Sample Writing Qs)

Updated: Jan 8

selective school exam

1. Insufficient preparation:

Students should begin preparing for the test well in advance and use a variety of study resources, such as practice tests and study guides. It's important to familiarise with the test format, including the types of questions, timing, and marking criteria. Getting detailed, individualised feedback on sections such as writing can be helpful.

2. Not Managing Test Anxiety:

Test anxiety can negatively impact performance. It’s vital for students to get plenty of sleep, and regular exercise for their mental and physical health. Performing at their best is essential to success and anxiety can be managed by encouraging positive self-talk and reaffirming your child for any doubts they have. It can be difficult to navigate without great mentors. Our tutors have been in your shoes, and know exactly how to cope with stress. Attending trial/mock examinations may also be helpful.

3. Ignoring Weaknesses and over-focusing on strengths:

Students often focus on their strengths and neglect their weaknesses. However, the selective test is designed to identify students with a range of skills and abilities, so it is necessary to have a well-rounded approach to studying. This may require parents, tutors and students to collaboratively work to address specific areas of improvement.
