5 Things you MUST know before applying to a Selective School (Entry in Y8-11)

Updated: Jan 8

selective school

Applying to selective schools in year 8-11 is a highly competitive process, with a large number of applicants competing for limited vacancies, especially in the junior years. Further, most schools do not accept new students in year 12.

But don't worry! Some schools take in more students in year 11, so applying for entry in year 11 may be a strategic decision if you were unsuccessful previously. You should always check the School's official website and the NSW government website regularly for updates as this may change year to year. Here is this year's official guidance for reference.

Without further ado, here are 5 things you MUST know before applying.

1. Application period

Applications opens between late June and late July each year for placement starting in Years 8 to 12 the following year.

For example, for next year's placement, applications opened on 20 June 2023 and closed on 21 July 2023.

2. Does the school accept your child's year?

Check if the school you are applying to accepts your child's entry year (e.g. if they don't accept year 12 and your child is in year 11 at the time of application, you will be wasting money and time).

3. Preference list and separate forms

You can apply up to 3 schools, but a separate application form must be made for each school. You must list the schools you choose in the same order of priority on every application form. You have to then send each form to the relevant high school by the application deadline.

4. School Requirements

Depending on the school, they may require additional forms, recent reports and interviews with the principal.

5. Test formats

NOT all schools use the HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test) by ACER. Some Schools use EduTest and other forms.

Once you decide which schools you are interested in applying for, you should check which test the school will use:

This is important to do well in advance, so your child can prepare accordingly. The key is to:

a) identify the top 3 schools your child wants to apply to;

b) identify the test you will need to sit (including its format, structure and tested subjects);

c) any additional requirements (such as interviews)

Don't leave preparations to the last minute!
